Expertise

Consortium

Through extensive research work, the two Fraunhofer institutes LBF and IFAM have already developed innovative solutions in a wide range of projects to develop alternatives to PFAS. The development teams use state-of-the-art technologies and processes to meet industry requirements while minimizing environmental impact. The combined expertise makes it possible to develop customized products and switch to environmentally friendly technologies.

Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF

Project Lead

Fraunhofer LBF has already gained valuable experience in the joint research project ‘PFASub’, in which the high demands on PFAS substitutes were discussed with 21 industrial partners. In addition, LBF has formulated elastomers in the partner project ‘Laser-structured high-performance elastomer seals for the energy transition’ (HoLeiEla) that are optimally suited for subsequent laser structuring and DLC coating.

Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM

In particular, Fraunhofer IFAM is contributing its extensive knowledge of surface technology to the project. The Surface Technology section develops innovative functional coatings and sustainable surface processes. Targeted surface treatment optimizes materials so that they can withstand extreme conditions, such as low temperatures and high pressure, and prevent corrosion and deposits.

The field of work includes materials and process development as well as industrial applications, supported by the characterization and evaluation of material properties. In addition, AI-supported methods for evaluating laboratory data and process control in surface technology are being researched.
